Disney World Contemporary Monorail Playset Accessory

This play set accessory allows our Monorail to pass right through the building, just like you'd see at Walt Disney World! It's a great addition to our Disney Parks Monorail playset, and a fun way to relive memories.

 Disney's Contemporary Resort, which the Playset is modeled on opened in October 1 1971 but was originally named the Tempo Bay Resort Hotel, was one of two original hotels to open at Walt Disney Worlds, (Disney's Polynesian Resort was the other). Known for it's modern architecture, this resort is unique at the Walt Disney World in that its monorail station is located inside the structure.

At each end of the building the monorail passes through an air curtain separating the interior and exterior temperature and elements, the only physical connection between the monorail system and the building is a strut at each support, connecting the platform to the "A"-frame. This eliminates any vibration as the monorail passes through the concourse.

It took approximately 1 1/2 years to build Disney's Contemporary Resort with construction December of 1969. The method used to construct the resort is called "unitized modular construction," and consists of forming an "A"-frame structure that resembles a honeycomb in its skeletal stage. The 1041 guest rooms are constructed individually and lifted into the honeycomb frame by crane.  This high rise building is 184 feet high and 220 feet wide at the base and 468 feet long and was made with approximately 540,000 tons of steel. There are approximately 5,872 decorative light bulbs inside and out and the Grand Canyon Concourse Mural located inside the Resort, towers 90 feet high and consists of more than 18,000 individually hand-painted ceramic tiles.
